The complex of Makaravank is near to the town of Idzhevan. It was constructed at the foot of the mountain Pajtatap on a high-mountainous plateau among dense woods.
The monastic complex of Mkaravank, together with historical castle Mahkanaberd represents one of the most significant monuments of architecture of the medieval Armenia as to riches of furnishings of monuments included in its ensemble, a great skill of stone-carving and exclusive harmonicity of the architectural group, skillfully placed into the marvellous mountaineos landscape. Monuments of Makaravank were constructed of dark pink and red stones. At the gate of the monastery water of a spring is flowing through ancient pipes up to day. Once the monastery was surrounded with impressive walls and extensive settlements were established nearby. The Makaravnk comlex comprises the following monuments.
The OLD church was constructed in X-ÕII centuries. The building of the church is rectangular from outside and cruciform from within. It was constructed of red stone on mortar. The whole surface of the altar and the frame of window apertures is covered with the finest vegetative and geometrical ornament. The entrance to church through the annex is from the western part.
The MAIN church constructed in 1204, represents a medium- size building which externally is similar to the old church. On the corners of the church two-storey annexes are located. The building was constructed of dark and light ochre. The architecture of the interior of the temple is very interesting and original. Four powerful pentahedral supports are connected above by twelve arches which support the drum of the dome. The interior of church is spacious, full of light. The internal furnishing of the temple amazes with its splendor. All the walls of the altar are decorated with the diverse patterns. The stones feature the carved ornaments consisting of eight-pointed stars, bouquets of plants where images of mythical animals are twisted, birds and fishes with human heads are wowed. . Here are also the image of the person in a boat, and a man's figure with building tools in hands and an inscription at his feet - likely to be the autograph of the carver. On an external wall of church is well kept a sundial . Below there is a figure of the pigeon.
In 1224 was constructed two-storey annex or DZAMATUN which connected both churches. The console ladders lead up to the second tier of the annex. Walls of the building are richly and artly ornamented.
Near to the old church the so called NSHKHARATUN - the hearth - is preserved that represents a building for the batch of prosphire. This is one of the few monastic premises of such kind, which reached to us. It represents a square building covered with the arch. In one of its corners there is a niche with a fireplace.
Church St. ASTVATSATSIN (The Virgin) was constructed in 1198. It is located separately from the main church. In the basis church is round. Then this circle passes to an octahedron of walls which ends in a dome proportional to the bottom basis. Windows of the church are decorated with richly trimmed platbands, and walls - bas-reliefs with images of birds and animals. Here is the image of a stork intercepting the snake which was twisted around it and the image of struggling leopards.
Unfortunately, very few historical data about Makaravank were kept. A unique source testifying to its historical life and building activity, are inscriptions, preserved on the walls of structures.
Even now, in a delapidated condition, MAKARAVANK complex amazes with its beauty.
